It’s Hard to Breathe

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

Simple, right?

Not even close.

I know firsthand how hard it gets, how the simple task of breathing is so damn hard that it feels like you are about to suffocate.

Life grabs you by the collar of your shirt, attaches a nice little vice, and you can’t explain why this or that is making you feel the way that you do. You can’t put into words how your soul feels like it is being squeezed tightly by a snake. You don’t know how it got there, you just know that from time to time, it’s there like a wayward lover that doesn’t tell you when they are going to come around.

Goosebumps start to show up, forming words and then sentences, spilling out all of your souls secrets.

A chill runs down your spine.

You can feel the rumble in your stomach as it twists becoming more uneasy by the minute.

Your mind, the knight that protects you, stands firmly at attention.

I’ve been there… and, if you are reading this, maybe you have too.

You are not alone.

Sometimes you just have to slow down, find your inner turtle, and escape under your shell for a little while. Because there are going to be days where the best thing to do is nothing at all.

You need to feel the heaviness, the weight of it all.

You need to cry, and cry until the sobbing hurts.

You need to sleep it off.

Because your self-care will be different from the next – there is no definition to what is right and what is wrong.

Do what is best for you.

Because even on those days when the pain seems like it will never end, once you let go of whatever it is that is buried deep down, you will be carried to freedom.

The freedom that is created when you break free, when you fly away from that prison that has been created by your deepest and darkest fears and insecurities.

And even if you fail a few times, remember this:

You will rise.

Just like the sun the darkness before has to come to an end.

The beauty has to be seen again.

You don’t have to fear.

Because I am here to tell you that everything you have struggled with, everything that has burdened you, is okay.

Because I am here to remind you that the space that surrounds you, the stars that made you are valuable.

You matter, no matter what you have told yourself before – no matter what they told you before.

You are magnificent.

You are beyond worthy.

You are priceless.

You may have scars, hell we all do, that is where the imperfectly perfect human that you are is going to shine brightly from – it’s where all of the darkness can be chased out of.

Every breath you take is a testament of your strength.

Every breath you take is another chance to get through.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

Breathe in.
